Lie Ren's power is to be able to calm emotions with either a touch of his hand on a shoulder or hand or something or by sending it through the ground. You need to be within 10 feet of him to this to work.

Very effective at hiding from monsters that can smell fear or cutting through anger. However, he'd never do it without your permission, so here you are!

STRENGTHS: 1. Ren is an excellent listener and while he doesn't talk much as other people, when he does have something to say, it's helpful. It shows that he pays way more attention to the comrades around him and friends than it appears. So even if someone is rambling a mile a minute and asks him a bunch of questions, when he has a moment, he will seriously consider an answer to them all.

2. He is very calm and collected 95% of the time, which serves him well in a variety of situations, from taking on Grimm (monsters in his canon) to figuring out solutions with his teammates. This dovetails nicely with the fact that he pays a lot of attention to how his team is doing. If someone else is stressing out, Ren can easily step in with his calm demeanor and help diffuse the tension around him.

3. Ren is an excellent cook. Although occasionally his tastes might run into odd choices of health food drinks, he can cook for one person or a team, making sure everyone is properly nourished to face whatever challenges lie ahead. It's also his way of quietly helping out in a group and contributing his fair share to camp life and team duties.

FLAWS: 1. Because he doesn't talk that much, he does have a tendency to get overlooked. It might be assumed for shyness by people who don't know him very well. He just isn't the type to really bring notice to himself in a sea of louder, outspoken people. And if no one wants to talk to him, he's not going to go out to talk to others, outside of events where it's kind of necessary to get to know people or for missions, which could lead him to being more withdrawn.

2. He has average to low endurance, either due his powers or just his general physical structure, which is a slender build and being an average height for a man. Not to mention that his fighting style is very up close and personal, which can be a problem if you're trying to fight something that uses trees as weapons. So he has to think way more on the battlefield because if he can't escape an attack or gets caught, he's going to get hurt.

3. When he does lose his temper, all his positive qualities and even just regular battle skills are thrown out of the window. This usually manifests itself in fights, if he sees a type of Outlander creature that he recalls destroying his home. This is potentially a deadly situation for someone to try and tank something mean and vicious without having the strength to take more than a few punches.

AU INFORMATION

AU CHARACTER NAME: Lie Ren, just goes by Ren
AGE: 17
GRADE: Junior year of high school

AU BACKSTORY: Ren lived with his mother and father in a small village until he was 7 years old. The village got attacked by Outland monsters and his parents made Ren run for his life. He never saw what happened to his mother, but his father was fatally injured trying to defend the non-combatants. Ren had enough time to take a hunting knife from his father before running for safety.

With no other family to turn to, Ren wandered around until he ran into a group of Hunters dispatched (too late) to save the town. He saw them fighting with their various skills and immediately wanted to be like them. When they were done with their mission, he basically begged to be taken along and he'd promise to be useful. Because Hunters usually do not have time for children, he took all of their advice very seriously, learning that children are to be silent unless spoken to.

He was never formally adopted by any Hunter. Just that whenever he was placed in temporary care, he always ended up following whichever Hunter came by. There was some pre-planning CR that he might have met a Hunter teacher or two during this time period, so that's still open, depending on future plans.

With so many teachers for the last 10 years, Ren's learned to be a quiet, silent partner in fighting Outland monsters. He's picked up his Flame powers because of this upbringing: to silence emotions and stay calm. It's very effective when what you're fighting can track you by scenting fear. He's also learned everything there is to know about surviving in the wild, setting camp and cooking anything remotely edible. The last Hunter he followed encouraged him to get more of a school education, despite him picking up the odd lesson in other subjects from his previous teachers. Not to mention that he could learn to refine his powers to be able to immediately cut the aggression of whatever he's fighting. If he could master that, he would prove to be an invaluable Hunter of the support variety.

So with this in mind, Ren starts his formal education...

AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION:
-- For starters, unlike canon, Ren endured losing his parents and home without a friend his age at his side all this time. So he'll be a bit more withdrawn after the icebreaking period.
-- Because he didn't have that permanent person at his side for years and years, he doesn't have a good grasp of family anymore
-- Not to mention that because he didn't grow up with anyone his age, he's not terribly up on what teenagers care about. He also might misstep here and there with talking to people. So he gets along better with adults and especially Hunters
-- While he is still a calm person like his canon counterpart, since he never had someone his age to be with, he probably never dealt with his grief over the loss of family. It's very likely internalized, which might backfire spectacularly in some future event.


RACE: Human
SECRET SOCIETY: Ren is a Candle that has grown up in the company of various Hunters and has basically become one through osmosis. However, his Hunter mentors have urged him to get some proper schooling to refine his skills before really making a name for himself.

POWERS:

Ren has fairly decent close-quarters combat skills with decent agility but only average endurance. He might get a bit thrashed around if he tries to tank anything on his own. RWBY canon has a power called Aura that every character possesses, which heals and protects them from getting seriously hurt...until it runs out. The unique manifestation of this power is called Semblance.

For the purposes of this setting, Ren has a passive ability that helps protect him from serious injury from one dangerous attack. His special Flame power is to to calm people down, by touching the target or sending his power through the ground, in a radius of 10 feet. It's basically a good way to be invisible to monsters that can scent fear. Everything feels muted when this power is activated and its effects are less than five minutes.

Eventually he'll be able to do this to monsters and interrupt their attacks, giving his party a chance to lay on the hurt. He just needs to refine those skills...
